Why Python?

Use one readable language across automation, backend work, and data tasks.

Where Python earns its place.

A short script can remove repeated manual work; the same language can also power services and data pipelines. Python matters because it lets you solve a problem quickly, then make the solution testable and maintainable.

Automation

Turn a repeated file, data, or operations task into a dependable tool.

Backend services

Build APIs and server-side features for real products.

Data workflows

Clean, transform, and analyze information before it reaches users.

Replace a fragile spreadsheet routine with a reliable script.

Every week a team combines two CSV exports to find records missing from one system. Names differ in case, dates have mixed formats, and one bad row currently stops the manual process.

The constraint

The script must never silently drop a row or overwrite the original files.

  1. Define the inputs

Inspect the files, choose a stable matching key, and decide how invalid rows will be reported.

  2. Automate the comparison

Read, normalize, and compare records; write a separate result and a useful error report.

  3. Make it repeatable

Add tests for duplicates, missing columns, malformed dates, and a second run with the same input.

What you would produce

A small command-line tool, sample input and output, tests, and instructions a teammate can follow.

Try an engineer’s decisionIs it okay to skip a malformed date and continue without telling anyone?

No. The output may look complete while it is missing a record. Decide a policy for bad data, report the row and reason, and make the run's status visible to the person using it.

This is an illustrative task. The scope of a module is agreed before enrolment.

What you would learn by doing it.

Each part of the exercise connects a tool or concept to a decision you would make on a software team.

Readable Python

Break the work into small functions with clear inputs and outputs.

Someone else can understand and change the script later.

Files and data quality

Parse input carefully and surface duplicates or malformed values.

Automation does not hide errors that manual review would catch.

Tests and repeatability

Test edge cases and make running the script twice safe.

A weekly task can become a dependable team tool.
